Vern Gohanna Memorial Legacy Accounting Scholarship 

Mr. Vern Gohanna, MBA, CFE, EA Founder and CEO of TaxCorp, LLC served Oakwood University with distinction as an Associate Professor of Accounting and as a Lead Instructor. He was responsible for mentoring many students who went on to excel in academia as well as professional business endeavors. As a way of recognizing, honoring and commemorating his legacy and dedication to undergraduate students in the field of business and accounting, YoUr Hope United along with some of his closest friends and loved ones have created an annual scholarship specifically designed to support an outstanding business or accounting major. The amount of the award for the 2023-2024 academic year is $1,500.

Requirements

  • The student must be a business or accounting major of at least junior standing and must have at least one complete semester of study remaining at Oakwood University (e.g., if applications are due in the Spring, student must plan to enroll at least for the following Fall semester). He or she must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 at the time of application.

  • The student must submit an individual writing sample that exemplifies their learning from a business course, accounting course or from an individualized learning opportunity/experience during their matriculation for consideration as a part of the application.

  • The student must submit a completed scholarship application and essay.

Pastor G.P. & Kathy Foster Scholarship for Youth Excellence

The Fosters have been married over three decades and together they share three decades of ministry. For ten years Pastor G.P. served as Assistant Vice President for Finance at Oakwood College (now Oakwood University) in Huntsville, AL.  While there he co-planted and co-pastored Madison Mission SDA Church. He was instrumental in raising funds for securing property to purchase their permanent church home. 

 

From 1998 to 2005 Pastor G.P. served as youth pastor of Sharon SDA church in Milwaukee, WI.  There he developed Youth Church, coached and organized the Christian Fellowship League (CFL) and developed and organized “Tuesday Night” youth prayer meeting.

 

In 2005 Pastor G.P. and his wife Kathy planted another church in the basement of their home just outside of Madison, WI. There they directed and produced the Prophecy Seminar, weekly television program, “Exploring the Word”, weekly Prayer Line, “If My People Pray” and weekly Sabbath School Outreach Program , “Kids Time”. 

 

The Pastor G.P. and Kathy Foster Scholarship for Youth Excellence is intended to honor the legacy of the Foster's and to help deserving students achieve the dream of a higher education. The scholarship seeks out students who show financial need, academic promise, and have overcome obstacles. The amount of the award for the 2023-2024 academic year is $1,500.

Requirements

  • The student must have a declared field of study and must have at least one complete semester of study remaining at Oakwood University (e.g., if applications are due in the Spring, student must plan to enroll at least for the following Fall semester). He or she must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at the time of application.

  • The student must submit an individual writing sample that exemplifies their learning from a business course, accounting course or from an individualized learning opportunity/experience during their matriculation for consideration as a part of the application.

  • The student must submit a completed scholarship application and essay.

Peggy Lee & Charles Ballard Advocate for Black Accountants Scholarship 

The Peggy Lee and Charles Ballard Advocate for Black Accountants Scholarship is designed to help future black accountants become CPAs by assisting with the cost of their college education. Mr. and Mrs. Ballard shared an unbreakable love for 24 years until Mr. Ballard fell asleep in Jesus on October 24, 2011. Ms. Ballard, Certified Public Accountant, Founder and Managing Partner of FBF Financial Services is one of the leading minority owned accounting firms in and throughout metro Atlanta. Her love and commitment to philanthropy has changed and shaped the lives of hundreds if not thousands through her generosity.  As such, The Peggy Lee and Charles Ballard Advocate for Black Accountants Scholarship is envisioned to honor the legacy of the Ballard’s and champion the next generation of black accountants. The scholarship program also provides scholars with educational and professional development opportunities throughout the year. The amount of the award for the 2023-2024 academic year is $1,500. 

Requirements

  • The student must be an accounting major of at least junior standing and must have at least one complete semester of study remaining at Oakwood University (e.g., if applications are due in the Spring, student must plan to enroll at least for the following Fall semester). He or she must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 at the time of application.

  • The student must submit an individual writing sample that exemplifies their learning from a business course, accounting course or from an individualized learning opportunity/experience during their matriculation for consideration as a part of the application.

  • The student must submit a completed scholarship application and essay.
